What to Plant in The Fall
Fall is Planting Season for Trees, Shrubs, and more
Despite the common perception that fall is the end of growing season, it is actually the best time to plant shrubs and trees as their root systems can become established in the warm soil before the ground cools and freezes. Fall also has more good days for planting than spring, when rain and unpredictable weather can make soil difficult to work with. Cooler temperatures mean less watering is required, and stable temperatures promote faster root development. September through November is the ideal time frame for planting. During the winter, your plants will establish deeper roots, until warmer weather stimulates top growth.
Plant your spring bulbs–like daffodils, snowdrops, and tulips in the fall to ensure a nice spring bloom, as they require a time of cold dormancy before they can bloom. Cold season vegetables–like carrots, spinach, kale, and brussels sprouts–are also best planted in fall.
Perennials, hostas and peonies being great examples, can be planted in the fall. Fall planted annuals, flowers that prefer growing in colder weather, include pansies, asters, sweet alyssums, violas and chrysanthemums. Take care water properly once planted and until the ground freezes to promote root growth.
Make sure to fertilize! Fertilizing before winter can have a great effect on next spring’s bloom. It’s important to know which fertilizer to use on what and when, as different fertilizers have different measures of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Using a nitrogen heavy fertilizer on your lawn in September and then a potassium heavy one in October or November to encourage blade growth after summer heat and root growth before winter freezes. Proper fertilizing results in healthy and beautiful plants.
