Add Instant Color with Autumn Annuals
The colorful plants don’t stop even as the temperature drops. There are plenty of options as we transition from summer to fall. All of these blooming perennials can tolerate the cold and they’re ideal as replacements for tired plants or to fill in any blank spaces. You cannot have too much color!
Pansies
This popular plant comes in a large variety of colors. They will survive the winter if planted in a spot with partial sun before the first frost, and then bloom again in spring.
Ornamental Peppers
These tough annuals are easy to grow and their colorful fruits come in shades of red, orange, yellow, blue, purple and black. Plant in full sun and keep soil well-drained. They do not tolerate frost well, so cover and protect them when the time comes.
Snapdragons
They’re the perfect flowers for late in the season. Include them in containers with other fall-blooming plants in full sun with moist, well-draining soil to grow the best blooms.
Calendula
This flower comes in bright orange, yellow and white, which makes it perfect for this time of year. Calendula blooms best in the cooler weather and looks great in container plantings or the border of a walkway.
