Tips to Start Now:

• Prune & Trim. Complete tree pruning before new growth starts. Also, pruning can begin on some summer flowering shrubs. If this was not done in the fall, get to it now. However, hold off on pruning azaleas, lilacs, rhododendrons, and forsythia. And wait to prune evergreens and shrubs until late spring/early summer.

• Fertilize. It’s almost time for hardy plants to wake up from winter. Begin to fertilize plants, so they will be well nourished.

• Maintenance. Remove winter covers from trees and shrubs. Add 2-3 inches of compost to planting beds, so they retain moisture and prevent weeds.

• Gardens. Plant cold weather vegetables such as spinach, peas, lettuce and broccoli once the soil is workable.

Looking for new plants to add to the usual spring flowers (daffodils, tulips, and hyacinth), consider common periwinkle, daphne, and creeping phylox. Plus, the different bloom times, colors and sizes ensure you will have a non-stop display of beautiful flowers until the final days of spring.
